At Nathanael Greene Middle School, I observed te second and fourth periods of the day (third was my teacher's prep period). In both classes I observed a lot of side talking when students were supposed to be copying down notes. During the Do Now in both classes, it took students a while to get started because they were distracted by other classmates. The purpose of class today was to copy down the study guide for the test that is happening tomorrow, and I noticed most students copying down everything my CT was writing. I saw several students fidgeting in their seats, and one evening tried to eat a snack at his desk (he thought no one could see him until I spoke to him). I also noticed one student with a his head down during the second period class, and when I went to talk to him he said he had a headache. During the review when my CT was answering questions and writing down the information that all the students should know for the test, some students were only scribbling down small notes here and there, and several used the opportunity to draw pictures in their science notebooks.
To keep the students' attention my CT would raise her voice from time to time. She also after each section asked the students if they had any questions, because she always sees on the tests where students don't ask questions and therefore get material wrong that she explained to her previously. In class, she wandered around at the front of the class for the most part. She was writing a lot of information for the students to take do we in preparation for the test tomorrow, and she asked me to wander around the back of the class to keep an eye on those students.
Student engagement is very important to me and I want to make sure my students are involved in class. I will monitor this by wandering around the class to see how each student is doing and by asking questions and selecting students' names randomly from either popsicle sticks or note cards to answer my questions. I will use my proximity to deliver feedback and monitor behavior Ian my classroom by wandering around the class, seeing what kinds of answers students are providing to my questions, and clarifying information when a student's answer looks incorrect, I have already noticed that the closer to misbehaving students (or students with an increased chance of misbehavior) are, the more productive they are with their work and the more work they get done . Something as simple as physical presence makes a huge difference between what students will behave and what students will not,
